The latest survey by the Williams Institute at the University of California, a preeminent team of researchers on sexual orientation and gender identity law and public policy, found that Massachusetts and Vermont are among the top 10 US states with the most same sex couples per household, with the most female same-sex couples residing in Vermont.
According to Williams, Vermont ranks fourth in the country (based on percentage) with approximately 3,373 same-sex couples, or 12.41 percent of all couples; and Massachusetts at seventh, with 33,452, or 12.17 percent.
As for the other New England state, Maine comes in at 12th, with 6,582 couples, or 11.30 percent, and Rhode Island at a close 13th, with 4,979 couples, or 11.28 percent. New Hampshire, at 17th, has some 5,495 couples, or 9.88 percent, and Connecticut, at 21st, with 12,641, or 8.91 percent.
Though not a state, Washington, DC, comes in at number one, with approximately 8.052 same-sex couples, or 15.77 percent.
No large New England cities came in the top 10 with the most same-sex couples, however Boston came in at number 11, with some 5,806 couples, or 20 percent. And in the medium-sized city category, Cambridge, Massachusetts, came in at number 5, with 922 couples, or 18.6 percent.
Notes the Williams Institute, “This brief analyzes data from the 2020 Census to provide demographic information about cohabitating same-sex couples in the U.S. The brief focuses on the gender, race/ethnicity, and relationship status of same-sex couples at both the national and state levels. The findings are also available through a data interactive tool that offers information at the national, state, and county levels.”
Williams finds about 1.2 million cohabitating same-sex couples residing in the US, with more than half of them married, and nearly one in five raising their own children.
