House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) recently admitted in a press conference that he doesn’t have “any strategy” to end the shutdown, emphasizing that he has no plans to work with Democrats on a compromise.
“I’m doing the right thing, the clearly obvious thing, the traditional thing,” Johnson claimed, adding, “I don’t have anything to negotiate.”

Johnson has been saying that the shutdown happened because Democrats want federal funding for health care subsidies for undocumented immigrants. That is not true; Democrats are demanding an extension to tax credits under the Affordable Care Act that undocumented immigrants are not eligible for. The credits are set to expire at the end of the year if Congress doesn’t act and will result in higher health insurance costs for millions of American citizens.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) recently slammed Johnson for refusing to negotiate, saying the Speaker has been a “massive roadblock to progress” and is “the main obstacle” in finding a path forward.
Many on social media, including members of Congress, have raked Johnson over the coals for his assertion that he has no strategy in all of this.
