A gay women’s sports fanatic and content creator recently gushed over the power of seeing a stroller parking lot filled with two-mom families at a women’s soccer game.

Coach Jackie J, as she goes by on her socials, recently spoke about leaving the Washington Spirit soccer game when she noticed the stroller parking lot was filled with mostly two-mom families buckling in their kids.

“Never in my life had I ever seen a majority of families in a family-oriented space like a stroller pickup place have two moms. and oh my God it meant so much to me,” she said.

“I think the first thing I thought when I realized I was a lesbian was that I couldn’t have a family. That was the first thing I kind of grieved for myself, and the idea not only that you can, but that you can be in a stroller parking lot at the end of a Washington Spirit game and be among a bunch of other families with two moms is just so powerful to me.”

That sight would have meant everything to her as a kid, she said, adding that there were probably a lot of kids at the game who it meant something to as well. But she also hoped that maybe “it will be nothing to them because they won’t even notice what that means for the way it’s shaping their idea of what a family can be.”

“So often, the last thing represented in queer representation is the representation of the family,” she added, “and it’s so important.”

She also spoke about how so much of her love for women’s sports is due to the fans – to “the queer families and the queer spaces and the queer people, and it brings me so much joy.”

Coach Jackie J was named one of ADWEEK’s 25 Most Powerful Women in Sports this year. The list called her “pivotal in amplifying women’s sports, cleverly blending humor, education, and advocacy.”

The 23-year-old speaks regularly to her hundreds of thousands of followers about queer issues in sports and, as ADWEEK put it, contributes to “enhancing the global conversation around equity and inclusion in athletics.”

In a recent interview, she emphasized she is “just a fan” and considers herself “the fans’ coach” rather than a journalist. She described her work as “more of a meta commentary on the fan experience.”
