Several pro-MAGA & pro-Trump X accounts revealed to be located outside US

The increasingly right-wing social media platform X recently implemented its new “location indicator” tool, revealing each user’s supposed country of origin. The tool quickly revealed that numerous “American” MAGA accounts were actually located in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

This isn’t entirely surprising, Mother Jones notes. The site, and other social media websites, were accused of allowing foreign “troll” accounts to influence the 2016 elections in favor of Donald Trump, using viral disinformation campaigns that alleged all manner of anti-Democratic conspiracy theories.

The pro-Trump MAGA accounts @MAGANationX showed its location in Eastern Europe; @America_First0 showed its location as Bangladesh; @_WarHamster appeared in West Asia; @_MagaScope was also in Bangladesh; The Daily Dot reported. Numerous profiles claiming to be female pro-Trump supporters were located in Thailand, Business Insider noted.

The reveal has sparked backlash from users on both sides of the mainstream political spectrum, who have begun accusing one another’s accounts of being based outside the United States, The Verve reported. Critics of the new tool have said that it threatens to reveal the locations of dissidents who post against brutal and vengeful regimes. Others have noted that the tool may assign inaccurate geographic locations to people using VPNs to get around local internet restrictions.

Studies have shown that X’s bots and fake accounts have proliferated under the control of X’s transphobic and white supremacist billionaire owner Elon Musk.
