Wicked’s Jonathan Bailey is the highest-grossing box office star of 2025.
In a win for the LGBTQ+ community, Bailey, who plays Prince Fiyero in Wicked: For Good, is the highest-grossing box office star of 2025.
On its opening weekend, Wicked: For Good grossed $226 million (£173 million) worldwide and earned $147 million at the domestic box office, making history as the biggest opening weekend for a Broadway adaptation.
Bailey’s return in the film, alongside protagonists Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba Thropp and Ariana Grande as Glinda Upland, is one part of his 2025 domination.
The actor also starred in Jurassic World: Rebirth as paleontologist Dr Henry Loomis, helping the film to achieve a $868 million worldwide gross.
Jurassic World: Rebirth currently sits as the fourth-highest grossing film of 2025, trailling only behind Ne Zha 2, Lilo & Stitch and A Minecraft Movie.
The first Wicked film took in $759 million worldwide from a production budget of $150 million in 2024, meaning For Good, its sequel, is on track to place high in 2025’s top 10.
Bailey’s high-grossing box office domination is a huge win for LGBTQ+ representation. Historically actors have aired concern that being out could cost them their roles.
In 2020, the British actor revealed that he was advised not to come out as gay by other queer men working in the television and film industry. In June, he shared that he feels pressure to be “excellent” as an out gay actor in a leading Hollywood role.
Adding to his accolades, the Bridgerton star was also named the sexiest man alive in 2025 by People magazine – the first out gay man to have the title bestowed upon him and to grace the cover of the magazine.
His Wicked co-star Ariana Grande congratulated him on his win, writing on instagram: “You’re the kindest and most beautiful,” while Marissa Bode highlighted “those abs”.
