Democrat Jasmine Crockett has mocked Marjorie Taylor Greene for resigning after a rift emerged between the firebrand Republican and US president Donald Trump over the Epstein files.

Greene, known for her anti-LGBTQ+ views and belief in conspiracy theories, including ones about “Jewish space lasers” and a malevolent force than can control hurricanes, has been a fervent supporter of the president and one of the fiercest proponents of the MAGA movement.

However, problems appeared in the relationship recently, especially regarding the Epstein Files, which Trump promised to release if he returned to the White House. Since then, he’s backtracked and even branded them “hoax”, to the outrage of some members of his support base.

The files are a huge raft of documents amassed during criminal investigations into paedophile Jeffery Epstein’s sex trafficking of women and children, and include transcripts, records and items confiscated during raids of the financier’s luxury properties.

Trump, whose relationship with Epstein has been at the centre of controversy and speculation, accused congresswoman Greene of betraying the Republican Party by criticising his administration’s handling of the recent government shutdown – she said it was, in reality, it was about the files – and last week announced he would not be backing her in next year’s house of representatives elections.

Taking to his Truth Social platform, he wrote: “I am withdrawing my support and endorsement of ‘congresswoman’ Marjorie Taylor Greene, of the great state of Georgia.” Having also called her a “ranting lunatic”, he said: “All I see ‘wacky’ Marjorie do is complain, complain, complain.”

Then, on Friday (21 November), Greene surprisingly announced that she would be resigning from congress, effective from 5 January, saying she would no longer be a “battered wife”. She also apologised for her role in “toxic politics”. She has claimed to have faced threats after Trump called her “a traitor”.

Discussing the announcement, Crockett, no stranger to criticising Republicans, including Greene, claimed her congressional colleague could not cope with being on Trump’s bad side for even a brief period.

“Honestly, I was like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me’,” Crockett told CNN’s Jake Tapper. “You’re on the other side of the president for one week, and you can’t take the heat. Imagine what it is to sit in my shoes… to not only be on the opposite side of him, but to have people… fanning the flames of hate, and imagine what those threats look like when you are someone like me.”

While rumours abound about Greene’s future, and possibly looking for a seat in the US senate, she has ruled out any run for the White House.
