A Tennessee Democrat had the perfect comeback after she was called a “traitor” for supporting trans people.

Democratic candidate Aftyn Behn held nothing back after responding to right-wing naysayers branding her a “radical” for her LGBTQ+ allyship.

In the lead-up to the Tennessee’s US House election, an X/Twitter user claimed Behn shouldn’t win the campaign because she would fund gender-affirming care, allow trans athletes the right to compete in sporting competitions, and “raise taxes.”

Responding, the 36-year-old said simply: “Um, I’m just trying to make your groceries cheaper,” alongside a shrugging emoji.

During her election campaign, Behn routinely called for an end to anti-trans legislation in Tennessee and other red states while decrying the GOP’s ‘war on trans youth.’

“The exhaustive list of anti-trans legislation and resolutions passed by the Tennessee General Assembly isn’t about protecting kids,” she said in a post, reported by LGBTQ+ Nation.

“It’s about using fear to distract us from real issues like the fact that our budget is busted, our roads are falling apart, and our grocery prices are the highest in the country.”

The Democratic politician tragically lost her race for a US congressional seat after Republican Matt Van Epps won by around nine percentage points.

His win, which attracted national attention, will ensure the Republicans retain their slim majority in the House of Representatives.

Despite her loss, Behn said she believed the support she had garnered was “the beginning of something powerful,” adding that “nobody in Washington believed we could get even this close.”

While the election is undoubtedly a win for the GOP’s retention of their Congressional majority, the margin of victory was less than half of projected polls, according to the BBC.

USA Today reporters Joey Garrison and Zac Anderson noted before the results had been counted that Behn’s campaign was “unthinkable” in the solidly GOP state.

“A defeat by single-digits could signal major trouble for Republicans in the 2025 midterms,” they added.
