American ice hockey legend Hilary Knight has shared the one crucial error she made when proposing to her girlfriend, USA speed skater Brittany Bowe.

The day before Knight’s gold medal game, she got down on one knee at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games.

The 36-year-old, who is the captain of the Seattle Torrent and the US national team, appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to discuss her proposal. She was joined by stars of the men’s team, Jack and Quinn Hughes.

It was quickly pointed out that she went down on one knee as the couple stood over a grate.

“I wouldn’t recommend it,” Knight noted. Fallon exclaimed that it would have been a disaster if he dropped the ring.

“I like high-pressure situations, I guess,” she replied. Knight went on to share why the Olympics marked the perfect time to get engaged. 

“I was really nervous during the Olympics, and logistically it just made sense with her schedule and my schedule.”

She also shared: “I just went full send. I didn’t think about the grate until I was hovering over it!”

Adorably, she also noted she had the ring with her the whole time and would check on it every night. 

Knight and Bowe announced their engagement in mid-February on Instagram. 

They captioned the proposal video: “Olympics brought us together. This one made us forever.”

Knight and Bowe began dating in 2022, after meeting at the Winter Olympics in Beijing. Knight credits her relationship with Bowe with helping her to find the courage to come out publicly. 

During her celebratory gold medal press tour, Knight revealed that she played at the Olympics with a torn MCL.

Additionally, she revealed to CBS that 2026 marked her final Olympic Games. “As of now, this is definitely my last,” she said. “I mean, storybook ending, amazing team to go out with, just incredible win, double golds.”

It’s been one hell of a run for Knight. She is a five-time Olympic medalist, winning gold in 2018 and 2026 and winning silver in 2010, 2014, and 2022.

Knight also made a notable appearance on Saturday Night Live over the weekend, with the show hosted by Heated Rivalry’s Connor Storrie.

Alongside the Hughes brothers and teammate Megan Keller, Knight joked about the ice hockey Olympic drama. 

Donald Trump invited the men’s team to the State of the Union. He then lamented he’d have to also invite the women’s team or be threatened with impeachment. 

“It was going to be just us,” Knight said, refreshing the viral phone call. “But we thought we’d invite the guys, too.”
