Donald Trump recently called Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico “whacked out” for supporting trans people.
The president called in to Fox News host Brian Kilmeade’s radio show, where Kilmeade asked if Trump had decided whether to endorse Attorney General Ken Paxton or incumbent Sen. John Cornyn in the state’s Republican primary. Both Cornyn and Paxton oppose LGBTQ+ equality.

James Talarico just won his primary. Republicans are already attacking his support of trans people.
Trump then ranted about Talarico’s acceptance of trans people and seemingly referenced a 2021 speech Talarico gave in which he declared, “God is both masculine and feminine and everything in between. God is nonbinary.”
Trump did not say who he would endorse in the primary, but he did say “the good news” is that Talarico “is whacked out, with his six different forms of gender.”

Republicans have already shown that they are likely to rely on their opposition to transgender rights in the 2026 midterms, hoping that voters will look past economic and other substantive issues and vote to take away rights from trans people. Conservatives in three blue/purple states have pushed to put transgender rights on the November ballot, while red state Republicans pass even more extreme anti-trans legislation to keep the issue in the headlines.
