Anti-trans activists resorted to stripping at a school board meeting, only for their protest to fall flat.
Three protestors took the desperate measure during a demonstration at an Augusta School Department board meeting in Maine, after officials opted to uphold a federal law that protects transgender students.
Nick Blanchard, who led the protest, claimed the stripping stunt would highlight how females feel in changing rooms where trans women are also allowed. As he spoke, two women and a man stood up and began to take off their clothes.
“You feel uncomfortable?” Blanchard asked board members. “Because that’s what young girls feel like when a boy walks into a locker room and starts unchanging in front of them. Yeah, you feel uncomfortable.”
He went on to claim that board members “don’t care” about the safety of young girls, or how they feel.
According to Just the News, some board members looked away, while others remained expressionless.
Blanchard claimed the demonstration was necessary to enforce change. “The only way to get them to listen… is to do something crazy and get national attention,” he said.
The Augusta School Department was following the Pine Tree State’s interpretation of civil rights legislation Title IX and the Maine Human Rights Act, which permit students to compete on athletic teams that align with their gender identity, as well to use changing rooms that correspond with their gender identity.
The US Department of Justice has sued the school board for not complying with president Donald Trump’s executive order that set out to ban trans girls from competing in girls’ sports.
Last month, Moms for Liberty campaigner Beth Bourne staged a similar stunt in California, to protest against the Davis Unified School District’s trans-inclusive toilet and locker-room policies.
She was briefly detained by police last year after she complained about drag queens in the lobby of the Hawaiian hotel where she was staying.
