CT state treasurer named to Victory Institute’s LGBTQ+ Political Power list
July 17 2025, 08:15

The LGBTQ+ Victory Institute, a global voice on issues pertaining to LGBTQ+ representation in government, has named Connecticut State Treasurer Erick Russell to its LGBTQ+ Political Power List for 2025. The list is comprised of 26 of the most influential LGBTQ+ state and local elected officials from across the US — public servants who exemplify the caliber of more than 1,334 LGBTQ+ elected officials currently serving nationwide.

“Growing up, it was difficult to imagine someone like me holding statewide office. I’m honored to share space on this list with my elected peers from around the country, leaders who are making a difference by being their authentic selves and affecting real social change. It’s why mentorship is a priority for me, to ensure that young people who may feel unseen or unheard know what’s possible,” Treasurer Russell said. “Accepting this honor means a commitment to using my platform to amplify the voices of and create opportunities for those that have been historically excluded.”

In 2022, Treasurer Russell became Connecticut’s first out Black LGBTQ+ state officeholder and the first out Black LGBTQ+ person to be elected to statewide office in the nation. He is a leading voice for the LGBTQ+ community who has been outspoken in his opposition to anti-transgender legislation and in his defense of LGBTQ+ youth.

This legislative session, the Connecticut General Assembly passed Treasurer Russell’s proposal to establish the Connecticut Safe Harbor Fund, which supports individuals in financial need with costs associated with traveling from states that deny reproductive or gender-affirming care. To leverage this success, he is working with state financial officers from across the country to create a national network of Safe Harbor States.

“I’m deeply grateful for this recognition and for the countless ways the Victory Institute helps develop leaders in the community, and I applaud my peers who have also been recognized,” Treasurer Russell added.

Victory Institute’s LGBTQ+ Political Power List was released today along with its Out for America Report.

“This year’s Out for America report shows the resilience of our LGBTQ+ elected leaders… We know these exceptionally talented public servants are exactly what we need as the antidote to combat the anti-equality virus in our halls of power,” said Evan Low, President and CEO, LGBTQ+ Victory Institute.
