October 29 2025, 08:15 The BBC has finally confirmed the future of Doctor Who, much to the relief of fans.
Following the end of the latest season, there were questions about whether we’d be getting anymore and, if so, when.
Those questions were answered when the BBC announced on Tuesday (28 October) that the long-running sci-fi series would be returning next year with a Christmas special, written by Russell T Davies. Plans for a new season will be revealed “in due course”.
It was also revealed that the partnership with Disney+ had ended.

Lindsay Salt, the director of drama for the BBC, said: “We’d like to thank Disney+ for being terrific global partners and collaborators over the past two seasons and for the upcoming [spin-off] The War Between the Land and the Sea.
“The BBC remains fully committed to Doctor Who, which continues to be one of our most-loved dramas and we are delighted that Russell T Davies has agreed to write us another spectacular Christmas special for 2026. We can assure fans [that] the Doctor is not going anywhere and we will be announcing plans for the next series in due course which will ensure the TARDIS remains at the heart of the BBC.”
While they wait, Doctor Who fans will be able to enjoy the five-part mini-series spin-off, starring Russell Tovey. It’s due to air before the end of the year and a new animated series is in the works for CBeebies.

In April, showrunner Davies was only able to offer hope that the show would return. Two months later, he wasn’t able to offer much more than: “Hopefully, we’ll have news soon.”
Today’s statement will put fans’ worst fears to bed and confirmed earlier comments made by the BBC’s chief content officer, Kate Phillips, who said: “Any Whovians out there, rest assured: Doctor Who is going nowhere.”
In February, the BBC hit back at reports that the show had been axed because of rumoured “abysmal ratings” and poor viewer response to so-called woke plots.
Doctor Who is streaming now on BBC iPlayer and Disney+ internationally.
