Donald Trump ranted about wiring allegedly installed by former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in an attempt to make Buttigieg sound dumb, but instead, everyone pointed out how ignorant Trump’s accusations were.

“There’s Pete Buttigieg, he spent billions of dollars on fixing the air traffic control,” Trump said during comments to Republican senators at the newly paved-over White House Rose Garden yesterday.

“They used copper wire going into glass wire. Any union electrician here or any non-union electrician would say you can’t hook copper into glass. It doesn’t work. They spent billions of dollars, they turned on the system, and it was stone cold blank.”

It seems that Trump was referring to how some buildings use both copper and fiberglass wiring to handle internet connections, a widespread practice that has been made trivial by converters.

Copper wiring has caused problems for air traffic controllers recently. A piece of burnt-out copper wire caused a blackout at the Newark Airport earlier this year, for example, which is why plans to modernize the equipment that controllers use involve replacing that wiring—often installed in the 1970s and 1980s—with fiberglass lines.

However, the copper wiring was installed well before Buttigieg was at the Department of Transportation, and the issue is not that it has to interface with fiber optic lines. The issue is that the copper wiring is aging poorly and supports limited bandwidth.
