Gay NYC Council Member Chi Ossé files paperwork to challenge Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in primary
Quote from Ossé: “The Democratic Party’s leadership is not only failing to effectively fight back against Donald Trump, they have also failed to deliver a vision that we can all believe in.”
Why it matters: The district is very blue, so the real election next year will be the Democratic primary. Many Democratic voters are upset with Jeffries for what they see as a lack of action taken against Trump.

Federal judges may have just saved a lesbian congresswoman’s seat
What happened: A federal judicial panel, in a 2-1 decision, rejected the GOP’s proposed changes to Texas’ congressional map. The new map would have made it very hard for out Rep. Julie Johnson (D-TX) to win reelection.
Why it matters: LGBTQ+ people are already underrepresented in Congress, and all the LGBTQ+ people in Congress are Democrats. Any move to make more Republican districts can take representation away from the community.

From the court ruling: “No regulation issued by state authorities or private individuals may diminish or restrict in any way a person’s rights based on their sexual orientation, an essential aspect of personal privacy and the free development of personality.”
Why it matters: How the government treats its own LGBTQ+ employees can inform how private employers and citizens treat LGBTQ+ people.

In her words: “It was like a big slap in the face to not only me but for the youth. And this was right after Trump became president.”
Why it matters: Trump’s election gave a lot of people permission to harass, attack, and discriminate against LGBTQ+ people, and it may take years to understand the extent of the damage.

It was shocking: Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez is accused of shouting slurs at Joss and his husband and shooting him to death after Joss’ house burned down.

He shot gay “King of the Hill” star Jonathan Joss. Now he’s facing justice.
