While Harvard is taking much publicized stands against the Trump administration’s threats to higher eduction, the university last week “quietly dismantled websites for offices related to diversity, equity and inclusion efforts,” reports the Boston Globe, replacing them with a link to “a new Office for Academic Culture and Community.”
Report the Globe:
Harvard College on Wednesday took down websites for its Women’s Center, Office for BGLTQ Student Life, and Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations, and announced the launch of a new Office for Academic Culture and Community. The shuttered websites for the three offices now link to a page for the new office, which Harvard faculty said they learned of in an email sent around 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
“This new office is part of the [university’s] ongoing effort to break down silos, ensuring all members of our community are connected, supported and empowered to contribute to a thriving intellectual environment,” said the email, which was obtained by the Globe.
Wednesday’s changes came after Harvard in April also renamed its main DEI office to “Community and Campus Life,” and similar moves at Harvard Medical School and its Graduate School of Education.
In an email statement to the Globe, Harvard spokesperson Jonathan Palumbo did not comment on whether the university will have campus offices serving women, LGBTQ+ students, and students of color going forward. …
The website for Harvard’s new Office for Academic Culture and Community is, for now, mostly blank, except for two statements declaring the university’s commitment to “cultivating a community where all of its members can thrive.”
