Laser clinic offers special deal on Harry Potter tattoo removals: ‘Trans rights are human rights’

A laser clinic in Manchester has slashed 50 per cent off the price of removing Harry Potter-themed tattoos, in a stand against JK Rowling’s views on the transgender community.

Rowling first faced criticism for her views in 2019 when she voiced her support for “gender-critical” campaigner Maya Forstater.

Celebrities who continue to profit from the brand – most recently actress Keira Knightley – have also faced criticism for not calling out, or standing against the author, who also writes crime stories under the pen name Robert Galbraith.

Now, Manchester Laser NQ, based inside tattoo parlour The Old Volt on Swan Street, has taken to Instagram to announce the promotion, saying the wizarding franchise had been “ruined” for many fans.

“Around 16 per cent of people regret getting a tattoo, less than one per cent of people regret gender-affirming surgery, and 100 per cent of queer people regret their Harry Potter tattoos (last stat not fact-checked),”  the post said.

“So, I will be offering 50 per cent off removal of any Harry-Potter-themed tattoos, for anyone. Trans rights are human rights.”

In an interview with Attitude, manager El said: “Like many queer people, I loved Harry Potter when I was younger and it only lost its magic because of the woman who wrote it.

“I know there are a lot of people walking around with HP tattoos that they no longer want, or even feel ashamed of, and I wanted to make it a bit easier to get them removed.”

In May, guide and Edinburgh Street Historians founder Fraser Horn told PinkNews that a decision to drop Harry-Potter-related tours in the capital was “not an easy one to make, but was necessary”.
