Late-night host Amber Ruffin comes out as queer on last day of Pride

Former late-night host and comic Amber Ruffin announced yesterday in an Instagram post that she’s queer.

In the post, she wore a shirt that says “QUEER” in several colors and wrote, “In what will come as a shock to exactly zero people, I’m using the last day of PRIDE to come out! Be proud of who you are, little babies! I know I am! And I can’t wait to be discriminated against for a new reason!!”

She was met with a great deal of support from other celebrities and fans.

Actress and singer Cynthia Ervo said, “Welcome baby love!! bathrooms are to the left, refreshments to the right, grab a chair. The DJ takes requests.”

Reality TV fahionista Tan France wrote, “Yay!! Happy Pride, love!! I hope you feel so loved and supported!”

“Welcome home Amber!! Our team just keeps getting hotter and smarter!! Happy Pride, dear one,” wrote actress Sophia Bush.

Comedian Franchesca Ramsey said, “Whooo we stay winnin!! happy Pride queen!”

“Welcome! I can’t wait to have your induction ceremony this week,” wrote fellow comedian Kalen Allen

Other celebrities who chimed in include D’Arcy Carden, Phoebe Robinson, Michelle Buteau, Audra McDonald, Aidy Bryant, and Vanessa Bayer.

Ruffin got a start to her career doing improv classes in Omaha, Nebraska. Her work led her to travel across the world to places like Chicago and Amsterdam.

Eventually, her work took her to Los Angeles, where she appeared in sketch comedy TV shows like Key and Peele.

She was picked to be a writer on Late Night with Seth Meyers, making her the first Black woman to become a writer for any late-night talk show. Ruffin would even appear on screen during the “Jokes Seth Can’t Tell” section.

She eventually went on to host her own late-night talk show on Peacock, The Amber Ruffin Show. This show was nominated for several awards including Emmys and ones from GLAAD. She has also written two books alongside her sister, You’ll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey: Crazy Stories About Racism and The World Record Book of Racist Stories.
