Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), one of the most anti-LGBTQ+ members of Congress, suggested renaming the District of Columbia in a congressional hearing earlier today.
She was speaking at a hearing held by the Water, Wildlife, and Fisheries Subcommittee when she got mad at her Democratic colleagues for criticizing Republicans for changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico earlier this year to the “Gulf of America.”

The District of Columbia doesn’t get its name from the nation of Colombia, which won its independence years after the D.C. was created. Instead, D.C. gets its name from “Columbia,” a poetic name for the U.S. used in the 18th century.
Boebert has a long history of making anti-LGBTQ+ statements.
