Nancy Mace rages against gay rights: “Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve”!

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) has made a name for herself this past year with her zealous opposition to transgender rights, but she claimed that she supported equal rights for cis queer people and that her antipathy was directed squarely at trans people.

Not anymore. Mace, who is now running for governor of South Carolina, appeared to declare her opposition to rights for cisgender gay, lesbian, and bisexual people on X.

“Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve,” she wrote, using a very old anti-gay slogan used to accuse gay people of being unnatural and against the Bible.

Her about-face is recent. Just last year, a transgender user of X told her that she is “going to be against gay rights as soon as it becomes socially advantageous” in response to her claiming that “gay rights have nothing to do” with trans people’s rights.

Mace appeared to deny the accusation on November 24, 2024. “Votes for gay marriage twice in fact,” she responded, referring to her two rollcall votes in support of the Respect for Marriage Act, which required state governments and the federal government to recognize same-sex married couples in the event the Supreme Court overturns Obergefell v. Hodges.
