Cyrus Dahmubed, city councilor at-large–elect for Newton, Massachusetts, is among the openly LGBTQ winners of the November 4, 2025 election. Dahmubed was endorsed by the LGBTQ Victory Fund, along with, in New England, City Councilors-Elect Ben Harman of Newburyport, Mass., and the Rev. Darrell Goodwin of Bloomfield, Conn.
Dahmubed is one of six newly elected city councilors in his hometown, and he pulled in about 40 percent of the vote, according to The Newton Beacon.
“It’s still a shock,” Dahmubed told the Beacon at a celebration at O’Hara’s in Newton Highlands.
Reported the Beacon prior to the election:
“Cyrus Dahmubed, a lifelong Auburndale resident and urban designer, says he’s running for one of the two Ward 4 at-larges seat on the Newton City Council to preserve the city in which he grew up and to make it more affordable and accessible for all generations.
“I can’t think of a single kid I grew up with who still lives here. They simply can’t afford to,” he said. “At the same time I see seniors beginning to realize they can’t afford to live here, so it becomes a question of who is the city for?”
“Dahmubed’s priorities, if elected, would include preserving and diversifying the city’s housing stock, expanding commercial opportunities, and building a far more accessible and robust transportation network.
Dahmubed is an architectural and urban designer, educator, and community builder. His research includes how queer spaces offer a framework for inclusive design, according the the Victory Fund.
