Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy has a message for American travellers just before the holidays: stop dressing like shlubs on planes.

“Be nice, say please, say thank you,” Duffy said on Fox News today. “Bringing civility back, I think, enhances the travel experience for everybody.”

“And so sometimes you just have to ask people, hey, let’s maybe go back to an era where we didn’t wear our pajamas to the airport. We actually might dress up a little bit. And if somebody needs help putting their luggage up in the overhead bin, help them out!”

This is part of a new initiative announced today by the Department of Transportation (DOT) called “The Golden Age of Travel Starts with You.”

In a press release, DOT cited an increase in unruly passenger behavior since 2019, something that out former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg spoke out against as well.

DOT lists things people should be thinking of when traveling by plane, which include “Are you dressing with respect?” and “Are you saying thank you to your flight attendants?”

Duffy discussed the initiative on Fox Business today as well.

“People dress up like they’re going to bed when they fly,” he said. “Be nice, be courteous, and so we want to push people as we come into a really busy travel season, help people out, be in a good mood, dress up. Bring civility back to travel, and I think everyone’s experience is going to be that much better.”

Duffy has spent the past year blaming the massive problems air travel in the U.S. has faced this year on his predecessor, saying that Buttigieg didn’t work hard enough to modernize air traffic control equipment and was instead focused on frivolous problems, like climate change. Buttigieg, though, did not have the DOT roll out an initiative telling people to stop wearing pajamas on planes.

It’s unclear if the president is aware of the initiative. Just this week, while on a plane, the president snapped, “Quiet, piggy!” at a woman.
