Political expert says the resistance has gained momentum: “Furious” Americans have had enough

Political expert Robert Reich wrote last month that resistance to the current administration is gaining steam. The giant of America, he said, is “stirring” and “soon he will roar.”

Now, Reich – who served as President Bill Clinton’s secretary of labor and is now a professor of public policy at the University of California, Berkeley – seems to believe that the giant has officially risen. “It’s furious,” he said.

Reich cited a series of events as proof, including the approximately 7 million people who turned out at last week’s No King’s protest against the current administration.

He said that every major media outlet (yes, even Fox News) has refused to sign an “unconstitutional demand” from Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth that would significantly limit what they are allowed to report.

“They’ve all turned in their press credentials,” Reich wrote, “which means no one is turning up for Hegseth’s press briefings.”

Reich cited universities that have turned down the president’s attempt to bribe them into destroying academic freedom, and he also mentioned that the massive consumer boycott forced Disney to reinstate Jimmy Kimmel on air after he was removed for comments about Charlie Kirk.

“The great sleeping giant of America is awakening,” Reich wrote on Wednesday. “I’m old enough to have witnessed the sleeping giant awaken several times before.”

The American people brought down Joseph McCarthy, he said, and a decade later, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act after “television showed… marchers getting clobbered by white supremacists.”

Reich continued, “It roared again after… [we entered] Vietnam, finally bringing to an end one of the nation’s costliest, deadliest, and stupidest wars.”

“It roared again at Richard Nixon after Nixon was heard on tape plotting the cover-up of Watergate – then was forced to exit the White House by helicopter on his way back to California.”

And now, he said, it’s starting to roar again.

“I’ve seen a lot. I know the signs. The sleeping giant always remains asleep until some venality becomes so noxious, some action so disrespectful of the common good, some brutality so noisy, that he has no choice but to awaken.”

In this case, Reich emphasized that “the sociopathic occupant of the Oval Office who won’t tolerate criticism” seems to have finally pushed things to that limit.

Reich mentioned in his previous op-ed that the president’s approval ratings are plummeting, that voters are increasingly turning against him, as evidenced by several recent Democratic wins in special elections.

He told Americans to continue fighting, assuring them, “Your activism is working.”
