Tina Fey’s impression of controversial political figure Kristi Noem on Saturday Night Live (SNL) has been highly praised by fans. 

Fey, who has previously spoken up for in support of the LGBTQ+ community, made a guest appearance at the weekend, making fun of secretary of homeland security by parodying her answering questions during a senate hearing.

“Hold my gun,” Fey said before throwing an AR-15 rifle off camera. “That’s right. It’s me, Kristi Noem. I spell my name with an ‘i’ because that’s how I thought it was spelled.

“I’m here to tell you that this Democrat government shutdown needs to end now.” Amy Poehler, who mimicked US attorney general Pam Bondi, was seen smirking behind her. The pair mocked the recruitment process of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.

At one stage, “Bondi” says: “Before I don’t answer, I’d like to insult you personally”, and later: “I’m not gonna dignify that question with a lie.”

In August, former Superman star Dean Cain’s training routine, ahead of joining ICE, was branded “embarrassing” by people online.

“Tina Fey nailed Kristi Noem’s vibe on SNL,” one person wrote below a video of the skit. Another said: “Can’t fool me, that’s Kristi Noem. Tina perfectly imitated Noem’s dead eyes.”

Kristi Noem has been a vocal opponent of LGBTQ+ rights, describing marriage as “a special bond between a man and a woman”. She previously avoided discussing LGBTQ+ rights with a star of HBO’s We’re Here by allegedly hiding in her office.

In 2022, when governor of South Dakota, she signed a bill banning trans student-athletes from playing in sports leagues that aligned with their gender identity. She is a long-time ally of president Donald Trump and was even tipped as a possibly running mate in last year’s general election.

In May, she refused to discuss the fate of a gay hairdresser with no criminal record, who had been deported to a brutal mega prison in El Salvador under the government’s crackdown on alleged Venezuelan gang members. Andry José Hernández Romero was released as part of a prisoner swap deal in July.
