New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s announcement about his transition fund has tickled his trans supporters.

The Democrat’s fund for transitioning to Gracie Mansion passed the $1 million (£765,000) mark on Sunday (16 November), just 10 days after the fundraiser was launched. More than 12,700 people donated to the campaign according to USA Today, with the average contribution reaching close to $78 (£60).

He took to X/Twitter to thank donors, saying the contributions would lay the groundwork “to make this city a fairer and more affordable place”. Attached to the post was a banner reading: “$1,000,000 funds raised for Zohran Mamdani’s transition fund.”

Trans supporters couldn’t stop themselves making the obvious joke. Hundreds of people responded to by writing remarks satirically claiming Mamdani had come out as trans.

“Everybody’s transgender now, let’s f**king go, we’re so back,” one person joked, while another wrote: “Damn, I wish I had a million-dollar transition fund.”

Someone else said: “So proud of my comrade Zohran for raising money for their gender care.”

Of course, Mamdani isn’t actually trans. The money is likely to go towards funding his new administration, hiring staff and helping to fulfil his policy pledges.

Nonetheless, the self-proclaimed democratic socialist’s focus on transitioning in the lead-up to taking office on 1 January has become a source of entertainment for many within the trans community.

Following his historic and overwhelming election victory earlier this month, Mamdani thanked his supporters and wrote: “Welcome to the transition.” The phrase has become a favourite among transgender men and women, with many using it as an in-joke for anything pro-trans.

A viral post on Bluesky, showcasing an email from Mamdani’s campaign team with the subject line “This transition is different,” reads: “I get it girl… we all feel this way for a couple months right at the beginning.”

Not only has he vowed to protect all New Yorkers, including LGBTQ+ people, the former rapper has also pledged to turn the Big Apple into a sanctuary city for trans residents.

Figures from the election show that 81 per cent of LGBTQ+ New Yorkers voted for him compared withß 46 per cent of their cisgender heterosexual peers.
